The Purdue women's golf team is in first place at the 2005 Mercedes-Benz Championships in Knoxville, Tenn.

The Boilermakers fired a first-round 288. They are six strokes clear of the second place squads from Michigan State and Kent State. No. 4 Georgia sits tied for fourth at 297 with the Swedish Junior National Team. No. 3 Arkansas is twelve strokes back in sixth.

Sophomore Whitney Frykman and senior Onnarin Sattayabanphot are tied for first as individuals. Both players sit at one-under with a 70 after the first round.

Junior Myrte Eikenaar is tied for eighth after firing a 72 for round one. Freshmen Christel Boeljon and Maria Hernandez lie in 27th and 40th places, respectively. Boeljon signed a first round card of 76. Hernandez tallied 78 for day one.

The Boilermakers are ranked No. 6 in the current Golfweek Poll.

Tennessee is hosting the event at the 5,932-yard, par-71 Cherokee Country Club.

Purdue has played in the event in each of the last six seasons. In 2002, the Boilermakers took home top honors and Kari Damron won the individual title.

The Boilermakers have won both events they have competed in this fall. The captured the Badger Invitational on Sept. 12 and the Lady Northern Invitational on Oct. 23.
