WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue men's cross country team was victorious in the 2005 Great American Legends, while senior Lindsay Zinn won the women's race with an event-record time.
Zinn, a fifth-year senior from West Chester, Ohio, shaved three seconds off the previous event record, running the 5K course in 18:36.4. The previous record of 18:39.0 was run by Wendy Embree of Eastern Kentucky in 2003. The Great American Legends was begun in 2002.
In the men's 8K event, Purdue's Justin Stadt (junior) and Eric Hammond (sophomore) finished second and third to pace the Boilermakers to a team victory. The two Boilermakers finished behind only Jacob Korir of Eastern Kentucky, who missed the best time in four years of the Great American Legends by 10 seconds.
Purdue finished the men's team standings with 26 points, while Eastern Kentucky scored 37 and DePaul finished with 73. Purdue was the only women's team to register five individual finishers, so no team scores were awarded.
The Boilermakers had 12 of the first 13 women to cross the finish line, with just DePaul's Carrie Moffett, who finished second with a 19:31.6, spoiling the sweep.
Seniors Corrie Whisner and Laura Farley placed third and fourth in the event. Whisner rana 19:52.7, while Farley crossed the line just over two seconds later with a 19:55.0. Rounding out the top five Purdue finishers were sophomore Carrie Fett, who timed in at 20:00.3, and senior Kaleena Cappel, who ran a 20:06.6.
On the men's side, senior David Rae was the third Boilermaker to cross the finish line, finishing sixth overall with a time of 26:47.1. Sophomore Zach Wilder cross the line 10 seconds later at 26:57.9, just in front of Justin Gauthier's 27:59.5.
Next up for the Boilermaker harriers is the Indiana Intercollegiates on Sept. 16 in Bloomington. The race, hosted this year by Indiana University, will be run at the IU Cross Country Course.
