COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Boilermakers were a much-improved team from two nights ago, but the end result was the same, as the Old Gold and Black dropped a 2-1 decision to the Missouri Tigers Sunday afternoon.
With the loss, Purdue's record dropped to 1-3. Missouri improved its record to 2-1-1, after beating both Indiana and the Boilermakers at this weekend's Big Ten/Big 12 Challenge.
The game-winner was provided in the 77th minute by Amber Swinehart. The senior forward received the ball near the six-yard line from Lauren Vineyard, spun around defender Amy Burrell and nailed a sharp diagonal across the ground near the right post.
Following a scoreless first half, Missouri struck within the first three minutes of the second period on a goal by Aria Hudetz. Assists were provided by Jennifer Nobis and Carolina Pohl.
Nobis pushed the ball to the right side of the 18-yard box to Nobis, who moved the ball three yards towards the net before dropping it back to Hudetz for the one-timer. Hudetz' shot from about 15 yards back sailed over Lauren Mason's fingertips into the upper left corner.
Seven minutes later, Purdue knotted the match at 1-1 on a goal by Shauna Stapleton, her first of the year. Lauren Sesselmann was credited with the assist, pushing the ball back from the right side to Stapleton, who was standing at the middle of the goal box. Stapleton's shot never left the ground, as it rolled sharply into the left corner.
The first half was played evenly between both teams, with Missouri having a slight lead in shots, 10-9. Seven of the Boilermakers' shots were on goal, including two taken late in the half by Jill Sarbaugh. Addie Moppert also had a nice look in the final minute, but her bullet was snared by a leaping Laura Buehrig at the left post.
Purdue came close to scoring on its first of five corner kicks, but Sesselmann's header of the Comisar kick was scooped by Buehrig on the goal line.
Missouri received just three corner kicks. The Tigers' first attempt was headed out of the box by Jessica Okoroafo, and the next two were off target. None of the Tigers' first 10 shots were on goal, as a majority of them were taken well beyond the 18-yard line and sailed either high or wide of Mason. In the second period, Missouri pushed deeper into Purdue's defense and put all four of its shots on goal.
Mason was called into action once in the first half, but a cross by Aria Hudetz to the left post, just missed her intended target of Jennifer Nobis. In the second period, Mason made two saves to go with two goals allowed.
Purdue completes its two-week, three-match road trip next Friday with a 7 p.m. contest at Utah. The Boilermakers return home to the Varsity Soccer Complex Tuesday, Sept. 13, for a 4:30 p.m. game vs. intrastate rival Butler.
