Any questions as to whether the women's golf team is for real after winning the Badger Invitational in the season-opening tournament were answered on Sunday, as Purdue won the Lady Northern Invitational by 20 strokes in Bloomington, Ind.

The Boilermakers led by 15 strokes after 36 holes and in rainy conditions, captured the event by 20 strokes over Michigan State. Another record fell as Purdue totaled 867 over the three rounds, 12 strokes better than its record-setting performance in the Badger Invitational.

Purdue's top five individuals all finished in the top 12, including freshman Maria Hernandez, who tied for low individual honors. No playoff was held because of water saturation on the course.

Hernandez, who placed third in the Badger Invitational, tied with Illinois State's Samantha Richdale. She fired a final-round 73. She posted rounds of 70 and 71 on Saturday. Her 18-hole average through two event is 71.8. Her total of 214 in the Lady Northern ties for the second-lowest 54-round in school history.

Senior Onnarin Sattayabanphot and junior Myrte Eikenaar both tied for fourth. The duo totaled 217 strokes over the two days. Eikenaar was in eighth place after Saturday, but fired a final-round 71, the lowest of the day of anyone in the field. Sattayabanphot carded a 73 on Sunday. She won the Badger Invitational on Sept. 12 to open the fall season.

Freshman Christel Boeljon tied for seventh overall. She fired a final-round 76 and totaled 220. She had back-to-back rounds of 72 on Saturday.

Freshman Whitney Frykman tied for 12th overall. She was tied for sixth after 36 holes, but posted a final-round 78.

Junior Caroline Haase tied or 51st overall. She totaled 237 and fired a final-round 80.

This is the third-straight year the Boilermakers played in the Lady Northern Invitational. Last season, Purdue placed fifth in the event held in Ann Arbor.

The event was held at the 6,142-yard, par-72 Indiana University Championship Golf Course.

The Boilermakers are in action again on Oct. 21 to 23 at the Mercedes-Benz Championships in Knoxville, Tenn.
