The Purdue women's golf team continues to impress during the fall season. The Boilermakers are in first place after the first 36 holes of 2005 Lady Northern Invitational in Bloomington, Ind., on Saturday.
Purdue fired a 288, the fourth-lowest round in school history, during the first 18 holes. It then carded a 286, the second lowest round in school history, in the afternoon. No other team in the field broke 290. The Boilermakers' total of 574 is 15 strokes better than second-place Penn State. Purdue had an astounding five individuals in the top eight after 36 holes.
Freshman phenom Maria Hernandez is tied for first place after rounds of 70 and 71. She fired a one-under 71 in the morning round and a two-under 70 in the afternoon. During the afternoon round, Hernandez posted four birdies, including three in a row on the back nine. She finished third at the Badger Invitational, her first collegiate event, on Sept. 12.
Freshman Christel Boeljon and senior Onnarin Sattayabanphot both finished the first day at even par and are tied for third place overall. Boeljon posted back-to-back 72s. Sattayabanphot carded a 73 in her first 18 holes and one-under 71 in the afternoon. Her round of 71 included four birdies.
Freshman Whitney Frykman is tied for sixth after finishing the day one-over par. She fired a 73 and 72 on Saturday.
Junior Myrte Eikenaar is in eighth place after a total of 146. She posted back-to-back rounds of 73. Junior Caroline Haase is tied for 46th overall. She posted rounds of 75 and 82.
This is the third-straight year the Boilermakers are playing in the Lady Northern Invitational. Last season, Purdue placed fifth in the event held in Ann Arbor.
The event is being held at the 6,142-yard, par-72 Indiana University Championship Golf Course.
