FORT WAYNE, Ind. - In the annals of Purdue soccer lore, there have been few better looking goals than the one delivered by senior Kim Comisar Thursday night at the IPFW Soccer showcase.
Comisar's corner kick goal in the 31st minute was so precise with its spin and trajectory it would make (professional billiards star) "The Black Widow" Jeanette Lee blush. The kick, taken from the far right corner, arced brilliantly in front of the left post, bypassing the heads of several position players as well as the fingertips of Panther's goalkeeper Erin Kane.
The goal put the brakes on a frustrating first half, in which many Boilermaker attackers were stonewalled by the UW-Milwaukee defensive line.
Prior to the opening score, Purdue's best looks were a bullet by Comisar from 23-yards back that rattled the crossbar, and a blast by Amber Henkle that just missed the left post. A Parrissa Eyorkon corner found Kalie Grambeau in the goal box, but her shot was blocked at the goal line by a Panther defender.
Purdue's defense was as tight, limiting the Panthers to one shot, which was saved by freshman Jenny Bradfisch with six minutes left in the first half. Junior Lauren Mason started the match but was unchallenged.
Sophomore Christy Riggle made the best defensive play of the first 45 minutes, taking down Sara Teegarden on a 50/50 ball 20-yards from the goal line with four minutes remaining. Eyorokon, playing her first match on the D-line, was as effective as the regulars, consistently making interceptions and derailing potential attackers.
At the start of the second half, head coach Rob Klatte inserted his entire cache of reserves, who responded in kind. Freshman Jessica Okoroafo booted a Kristin Hetzel assist across the stripe in the 53rd minute, then rookie Amy Burrell headed a Shauna Stapleton corner into the lower right corner, pushing the Boilermaker lead to 3-0.
Burrell came within inches of scoring a second time, but her header off a direct free kick sailed high.
The Boilermaker defense was equally effective in the second half, holding the Panthers to just one additional shot, which was saved by rookie keeper Deanna Eff. Defenders Zarinah Blockton and Riggle also won several one-on-one contests; Blockton closed off Jodi Klagos as she attempted to coast down the left side, and Riggle shoved aside Stacey Faude deep in the right corner.
Purdue closes its exhbition season Saturday at 8 p.m., taking on Oklahoma at the IPFW Soccer Showcase.
