OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The Purdue men's golf team missed the cut after the third round of the 2005 NCAA Championships in Owings Mills, Md.

The top 15 teams advance to the final round played on Saturday. Purdue finished tied for 23rd with Texas and San Diego State at 53 over par.

The Boilermakers totaled 893 over the three rounds and fired the second-lowest round of the day. They were tied for 29th after the first two rounds.

Georgia leads the event with a total of 855. Georgia Tech is in second place. Purdue was the only Big Ten school competing in the championships.

The Boilermakers were led on Friday by sophomore Peter Richardson. He fired a three-over 73. his round included one birdies and four bogeys. He tied for 75th overall with a total of 224.

Three Boilermakers carded 74 on Friday. Sophomores Pariya Junhasavasdikul and Bobby Bennett and senior Dustin Cone were all four over par. Cone ended his career at Purdue as the highest placing Boilermakers, tying for 62nd overall with total of 222.

Bennett tied for 75th with a total of 224. Junhasavasdikul tied for 104th with a total of 227.

Freshman Santiago Russi fired a final-round 78 and tied for 132nd overall.

Purdue is one of 14 schools to compete in four of the last five NCAA Championships. This was the school's 28th appearance in the event.

The championships are being held on the Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Md. The course is a par 70 and is playing at 7,131 yards.

With 28 appearances, the Boilermakers have a rich history of competing in the NCAA Championships. They were NCAA Champions in 1961 and have placed second five times.

In addition, Purdue has had two individual winners at the event and has had seven first-team All-America selections.

The Boilermakers tied for tenth at the NCAA Central Regional Championships in South Bend, Ind., on May 21. They earned a bid in the championships by defeating Witchita State in a playoff. The top 10 teams from each of the three regional sites advanced to the NCAA Championships.

Purdue is ranked No. 32 in the Golfweek/Sagarin Poll.
