Down The Stretch They Come

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The Purdue men's golf team is in fourth place after two rounds of the 2005 NCAA Men's Golf Central Regional Championships.

The Boilermakers fired a 288 on Friday, the fourth-lowest round of the day. Their fourth place standing is only one stroke behind thrid-place Missouri and only eight strokes ahead of the 15th-placed teams.

The top 10 teams after Saturday's final round advance to the NCAA Championships. Oklahoma State leads the event and Augusta State is second.

Rain delayed the beginning of the tournament on Thursday and several teams completed their first round on Friday.

Sophmore Bobby Bennett played superb on Friday. He had five birdies, one bogey and one double-bogey on his way to a one-under 69. He is tied for seventh overall.

Sophomore Pariya Junhasavasdikul and freshman Santiago Russi are both tied for 30th after the first two rounds. Junhasavasdikul carded a 74 despite an eagle on the par-5 No. 5. Russi had four birdies and five bogeys in his round of 71.

Senior Dustin Cone carded a 74 on Friday. He is tied for 63rd overall. Junior Peter Richardson is tied for 94th after a second-round 76.

There are three regional sites with 27 teams at each regional. The top 10 teams from each regional advance to the 2005 NCAA Men's Golf Championships on May 5 to 7. Each regional is a 54-hole event.

Purdue has advanced to three of the last four NCAA Championships.

The Central Regional Championships are being hosted by Notre Dame at the Warren Golf Course in South Bend. The course is a par 70 and is playing 7,011 yards.

The final round will be held on Saturday.
