SUNRIVER, Ore. - The Purdue women's golf team is in 23rd place after the first round of the 2005 NCAA Women's Golf Championships in Sunriver, Ore.
The Boilermakers fired a first-round 309 on Tuesday. They only managed two birdies on the challenging course.
Southern California and UCLA are tied for the lead in the event after the first round with scores of 288. Auburn is third with 290. The Boilermakers are merely nine strokes out of the top 10.
Junior Onnarin Sattayabanphot and Big Ten Frreshman of the Year Whitney Frykman both carded 76 in the first round. Their rounds of five-over par has them in a tie for 57th place.
Sophomore Caroline Haase fired a seven-over 78. She is tied for 89th overall.
Redshirt-freshman Kara Eschbach totaled 79 on Tuesday. She is tied for 98th.
Sophomore Myrte Eikenaar is tied for 125th after a first-round 82.
The championships are being held on the Meadows Golf Course at the Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Ore. Oregon State is serving as the tournament's host.
The course is a par 71 and playing at 6,312 yards.
Purdue is one of six schools to advance to the last six NCAA Championships.
The Boilermakers tee off at 2:10 p.m. West Coast Time on Wednesday in the second round.
