ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Purdue women's golf team finished in fourth place after inclement weather cancelled the final 18 holes of the 2005 Big Ten Women's Golf Championships.
Conditions worsened on Saturday as winds gusted over 20 miles per hour and temperatures dipped into the low 30's. At 9 a.m. on Sunday morning, conference officials called the tournament comlete after 54 holes. Teams kept their third round totals as the finals.
Purdue fired a third-round 325 and totaled 938 strokes. The Boilermakers finished six strokes out of second place. They were behind Michigan State for third place by five strokes.
Ohio State ran away with the event. The Buckeyes totaled 900 strokes. Michigan placed second with 932 strokes.
Despite no action on the golf course, the Big Ten handed out its postseason awards. Junior Onnarin Sattayanbanphot and sophomore Myrte Eikenaar were each named first team All-Big Ten. Freshman Whitney Frykman earned second team All-Big Ten honors and the Freshman of the Year Award.
Despite the adverse conditions, Sattayabanphot managed a 78 on Saturday. Her first-round total of 72 was the lowest score of the tournament. She tied for fourth place with a total of 227.
Frykman posted a 79 on Saturday. She finished in seventh place overall. She has totaled 229 strokes over the two days.
Eikenaar dropped into a tie for 32nd place. She fired an 88 on Saturday. She had a total of 243. She posted a 74 in her first round on Friday. Sophomore Caroline Haase jumped from 31st place to a tie for 22nd place after an 81 on Saturday. She totaled 240.
Redshirt-freshman Kara Eschbach fired an 88 and tied for 61st. Freshman Danielle Wolter shot an 87 and finished in 64th place.
The championships were hosted by Michigan and held at the University of Michigan Golf Course. The course is a par 72 and is playing at 5,966 yards.
The Boilermakers now await word on the NCAA Regional Championships.
