WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The only good news for Jack Warner coming out of Saturday's Indiana Intercollegiates meet was that everybody's healthy for next weeks Penn Relays.

Other than that, Warner didn't have much to smile about as both his teams placed second to the Indiana State Sycamores. On the men's side, Indiana State led for the entire meet, scoring 216.5 points to Purdue's 153.5. Vincennes placed third with 29.5 points and IPFW was fourth with 7.5 points.

The women's finish was a bit more heartbreaking, losing the team title by one point on the final race (4x400-meter relay). ISU scored 142 points to Purdue's 141, and were helped tremendously by its dominance on the track.

Purdue won seven of eight field events, and led by as many as 30 points at one point, but Indiana State steadily chipped away at the lead with wins in the 100, 200, 800 and 1,500. The Sycamores also won the 400 hurdles and 5,000-meter run.

Leah Kincaid was Purdue's leader on the track and in the field, taking first in the 100 hurdles, long jump, triple jump and with the 4x100-meter relay team, but had little left in the tank as she limped towards the first exchange of the 4x400-meter relay. Kincaid's troubles set the Boilermakers back a few meters, as they lost 4:05.54 to 4:09.92.

Purdue's lead was boosted early by wins from Courtney Magnuson (hammer) and Astin Steward (discus). Magnuson recorded an NCAA regional qualifying mark of 55.95 meters (183-7), while Steward finished with a distance of 46.74 (153-4). The Boilermakers also were assisted by three one-two showings from the tandems of Jocelyn Lindsay/Megan Darraugh (pole vault), Sheena James/LaTonya Fryerson (shot put), and Kara Patterson/Lindsey Blaine. Patterson also posted a regional qualifying distance of 48.24 (158-3).

Ashley Kemp was Purdue's only winner on the track other than Kincaid. Kemp won the 400 in 58.87 and was part of the winning 4x100 team, which also featured Gina Harvey and LaShauna Harris.

Purdue's men won half the 18 events but couldn't collect enough second and third-place points to keep pace with the Sycamores. ISU claimed the top-two spots in the 200, 400, 800, as well as in the pole vault and shot put. Additionally, the Sycamores won the javelin, discus and 1,500 meter crowns. There was no winner in the triple jump, with both competitors fouling out.

The Boilermakers looked especially good in the hurdles and relays. Keith Hopkins and Kern Woods were one-two in the 110-meter hurdles, and Brian Kaluf led from start to finish in the men's 400-meter hurdles. Hopkins also was part of both winning relays, leading the 4x100 team to a time of 42.91 and the 4x400 squad to a mark of 3:23.38.

Hopkins was joined on the 4x100 by Kenneth Baxter, Alfred and Kern Woods, while the 4x400 team was comprised of Kaluf, Terrell Thompson and Jh'Rome Tuggle. Also winning on the track were freshmen Alfred Woods in the 100 (11.06) and Zach Wilder in the 5K (14:59.08). In the field, victories were collected by Derek Watkins in the high jump, Kern Woods in the long jump and J.P. Smolenski in the hammer throw. Smolenski's winning effort was a NCAA regional qualifying mark of 62.09 (203-8).

Purdue heads to the Penn Relays next week, which is one of the largest meets of the outdoor season. The Boilermakers begin competing in Philadelphia next Thursday, April 28.
