WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - After a big win on Friday against No. 19 Texas A&M the Purdue women's tennis team fell to No. 30 Wake Forest 5-2 on Sunday at the Lafayette Sports Center. The 46th-ranked Boilermakers now post a 2-3 record in the 2005 season, while the Demon Deacons are 4-2.
Wake Forest leads the all-time series with Purdue 3-0. The Demon Deacons beat Purdue 5-4 in Knoxville, Tenn., on Oct. 24, 1986 and 9-0 in Winston-Salem on Feb. 20, 1989.
The Boilermakers started off hot. Winning the point in doubles, partners Alyssa Rodriguez and Hala Sufi defeated Karin Coetzee and Danielle Schwartz 8-6 at No. 2, while teammates Brooke Beier and Stephanie Wooten beat Demon Deacons Alex Hirsch and Jenna Loeb 8-2 at No. 3. Purdue Seniors Shawna Zuccarini and Lara Burgarello fell 8-5 at No. 1 against Wake Forest partners Ashlee Davis and Katie Martzolf.
Purdue head coach Mat Iandolo was impressed with how the Boilermakers started the day.
"We were able to win the two doubles matches and get the point which helped," says Iandolo. "It was a good start. Our doubles were really solid."
Rodriguez won the first singles match of the day 6-2, 6-1 against Schwartz at No. 4 which put the Boilermakers up 2-0.
However, this is where the streak ended. The Demon Deacons came back and defeated Purdue in the five following matches.
Freshman Wooten fell to senior Coetzee, currently ranked 16th, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 giving Wake Forest its first point on the board. Purdue's Minna was then defeated by Demon Deacon Blakely Offutt 6-4, 6-1 at No. 6 which tied the score at 2-2.
Burgarello then lost to Hirsch at No. 5 6-3, 6-4. Martzolf defeated Zuccarini at No. 3 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 and Demon Deacon Davis beat Boilermaker Sufi 1-6, 7-6, 6-1 at No. 1.
With four of Purdue's next five matches on the road, Iandolo says the team will put this loss behind them and prepare for its upcoming competition.
"We're going to have to prepare and get ready for next weekend and give it a go," says Iandolo.
After playing three matches in six days against Western Michigan, Texas A&M, and Wake Forest, Purdue will rest briefly before taking on Kentucky in Lexington on Feb. 19. The Boilermakers then will have another layoff prior to starting Big Ten action in Illinois.
