WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue men's golf team used its home course advantage to finish in third place after the first round of the NCAA Men's Golf Central Regional Championships on Thursday.
The Boilermakers were the first group off the tee, and took advantage of the low winds to shoot a 295. Oklahoma State leads the event after a first-round 287.
"It's an okay start," said head coach Devon Brouse. "It's a solid first round, but in a tournament like this you have to put three good rounds together."
The wind picked up in the afternoon, making conditions for the afternoon groups more difficult.
"It will be a challenge to play well tomorrow in the afternoon when the winds become unpredictable," said Brouse. "The course was in great shape this morning."
The rough of the Kampen Course was grown to five inches, making hitting the fairways a premium.
"This course does a great job of separating the talented teams," said Brouse. "You have to be able to put the ball in play to score well here."
Purdue was led by freshman Peter Richardson, who fired a first-round 72. Richardson recorded two birdies and two bogeys. He is tied for 10th.
"It's a pretty solid start," said Richardson. "I was able to keep the ball out of the rough for most of the day. I'm very happy with my start."
Senior Shiv Kapur is tied for 17th after a first-round 73. Kapur recorded four birdies and five bogeys.
"It was an up and down day for me," said Kapur. "I never got into a set rhythm. I started off strong off the tee, then improved on my irons and finished strong with my putting."
Junior Dustin Cone fired a 74 and is tied for 25th overall. He carded four birdies and six bogeys.
Senior Luke Epp shot a 76 and is tied for 45th. Freshman Pariya Junhasavasdikul is tied for 88th after a first-round 80.
Of the 27 teams and six individuals who are competing, the top 10 teams and two individuals will advance to the 2004 NCAA Men's Golf National Championships in Hot Springs, Va., from June 1 to 4.
Admission is free to the public and the second round begins at 7:12 a.m. on Friday. Purdue tees off at 11:51 a.m. The Kampen Course is playing at 7,259 yards and a par 72.
