STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - David Teague scored 14 points to lead four Boilermakers in double figures, and Purdue held off a second-half rally to beat Penn State 62-47 on Wednesday.
The Boilermakers (15-6, 5-3 Big Ten) never trailed, but were tied twice in the second half, the last time at 36-36 at the 12-minute mark. But after a time-out, Purdue went on a 13-5 run, including three baskets from Brett Buscher, the last of which made it 49-41 with 5:58 left.
Penn State (9-10, 3-5) twice pulled within six points, the last time when Jan Jagla's turnaround jumper made it 51-45. But a layup by Buscher and a Teague jumper gave the Boilermakers their first double-digit lead, 55-45, with 3:23 left.
Ivan Kartello finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds, and Buscher and Brandon McKnight each scored 12. Austin Parkinson had a career high 12 assists.
Penn State opened the second half on a 7-2 run, tying the game for the first time when a Jagla 3-pointer made it 31-31 with 16:42 left. Purdue briefly pulled ahead, but Aaron Johnson scored on an inbounds pass, then had an assist on a Marlon Smith 3-pointer that tied the score again, 36-36, with 12 minutes left.
Johnson tied a career high with 20 points and had 12 rebounds, but was the only Nittany Lion to score in double figures.
Purdue took an early lead, going up 10-2 on a McKnight jumper with 15:44 left in the first half, already his third basket in the game. The Boilermakers led throughout the half, but Johnson's 3-pointer at the buzzer brought Penn State within 29-24 at halftime.
