Men's Swimming And Diving Adds To Lead In Day Two Of Purdue Invite

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue men's swimming and diving team added to its lead during day two of the 2003 Purdue Invitational.

The Boilermakers' point total stands at 521 going into today's events. Placing behind the Boilermakers are Northwestern (456.5), Iowa (411.5), Southern Illinois (385), Wyoming (250), Ohio State (194), and Buffalo (151).

Senior Tamas Bessenyei and Junior Eric Prugh both grabbed victories for the Boilermakers in day two. Bessenyei swam a 54.47 to win the 100 breast, and Prugh won the 200 free by swimming a time of 1:39.32. Senior Kyle Jackson finished fourth in the 200 free with a time of 1:41.59.

For the second day in a row, Boilermaker diving came up strong by taking three out of the top four spots in the 3-meter diving event. Freshman Steven LoBue finished second with a score of 531.25. Junior Clay Davis (485.45) and sophomore J.R. Hillis (470.75) took the third and fourth spots.

Both Purdue relay teams started and ended the day with solid finishes. Junior Louis Paul, Bessenyei, junior Iggy Goh, and sophomore Andre Pereira started the day with a third place finish in the 200 medley relay (1:31.22), and the 800 free relay team of Prugh, Paul, Jackson, and senior Garth Bringman finished the day by grabbing the silver medal with a time of 6:44.94.

Paul also swam a 49.96 in the 100 back to grab himself another second place finish on the day.

The men's swimming and diving team will be back in action at noon Sunday in the Boilermaker Aquatic Center to finish up the third and final day of the 2003 Boilermaker Invitational.
