ATLANTA, GA - The Purdue women's swimming and diving team lead Florida Atlantic, 113-70, but trail Georgia Tech, 94-92, after the first day of competition in a tri-meet at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center in Atlanta. The Boilermakers are currently 1-1 overall and 0-1 in conference action.
Purdue began the day by setting a new Georgia Tech Aquatic Center pool record in the 200 free relay. Junior Tracy Duschac, freshman Kimbre Vogel, junior Katie Seleskie, and freshman Susan Hentschel took first place with a time of 1:34.89 which shattered the old pool record of 1:40.62.
Almost setting another pool record was senior Jenni Bean who finished first in the 200 IM with a time of 2:07.55, just missing the pool's record of 2:07.54. Freshman Jennifer Merte finished right behind Bean with a time of 2:08.54
For the fourth consecutive week, sophomore Carrie McCambridge was victorious in the 1-meter diving competition by scoring a 270.30. Freshman Bethany Jensen finished third with a score of 253.43.
Purdue finished the day on a high note with the 400 medley relay team of freshman Katharine Telfer, sophomore Erica Chandler, junior Christine Leupold and Hentschel grabbing a victory by swimming a 3:52.06.
Purdue head coach Cathy Wright-Eger expects to see great competition throughout the rest of the meet.
"We came out strong today. The rest of the meet is definitely going to be a dog fight. We have to be in our prime tomorrow in order to have a chance to win this meet."
The Boilermakers will return to action tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. for the final day of the tri-meet against Florida Atlantic and Georgia Tech in Atlanta.
