Purdue Men's Swimming And Diving Lead After First Day Of Tri-Meet

ATLANTA, GA - The Purdue men's swimming and diving team lead Georgia Tech, 123-63, and Florida Atlantic, 151-32, after the first day of competition in a tri-meet at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center in Atlanta. The meet is the Boileremakers' first tri-meet of the season.

Junior Louis Paul led the Boilermakers with three victories, two which set new Georgia Tech Aquatic Center pool records. He swam a 50.35 in the 100 back, breaking the pool record of 50.40. Paul then went on to win the 200 IM with a score of 1:52.78, which also broke the pool record of 1:53.56.

Junior Iggy Goh and sophomore Blake Scholz also set a new pool record in the 50 free and the 200 fly. Goh finish first with a time of 21.07 in the 50 free, breaking the recent pool record of 21.17. Scholz placed first in the 200 fly with a time of 1:50.85, breaking the pool record of 1:52.67. Senior Nick Cenci took second in the 200 fly with a time of 1:54.81.

The Boilermaker relay teams started and finished the day with victories in the 200 free and the 400 medley. Goh, sophomore Andre Pereira, Scholz, and junior Eric Prugh were victorious in the 200 free with a time of 1:24.54. Paul, senior Tamas Bessenyei, Scholz, and Prugh also set a new pool record in the 400 medley relay by taking first with a time of 3:24.99.

Purdue divers grabbed the two top spots in the 1-meter diving competition. Freshman Steve LoBue captured first place with a score of 331.80, and sophomore Josh Karshen finished second with a score of 306.00.

Purdue head coach Dan Ross was satisfied with the solid performance that his swimmers brought to the first day of the meet.

"Our guys came out fighting today. We expected to have a tough time with Georgia Tech, but our swimmers performed strong all day."

The Boilermakers will return to action tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. for the final day of the tri-meet against Florida Atlantic and Georgia Tech in Atlanta.
