Men's Tennis Collects Three Wins at Fallon Invitational

Oct. 4, 2003

Junior Sounak Chatterjee, freshman Jarred Leibner and freshman Scott Warner collected victories for the Purdue men's tennis team in a hidden-dual match against host Notre Dame at the Tom Fallon Invitational on Saturday in South Bend.

Chatterjee rallied for a 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (11-9) victory over Irackli Akhvlediani. Leibner came back to beat Bobby McNally 1-6, 6-4, 1-0 (11-9). Warner recovered from a first-set loss to post a 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (9-7) win against Nick Chimerakis.

Purdue head coach Tim Madden applauded his three victors.

"Sounak played with a lot of confidence and he played within himself," Madden said. "It was really good to see Jarred and Scott get through some close matches. They found a way to win."

In other singles action, junior Filip Koziell fell 6-0, 6-1 to Stephen Bass. Sophomore Colin Foster lost 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-7) to Eric Langenkamp. Junior David Robinson lost 6-4, 6-3 to Ryan Keckley. Freshman Eric Hodgman lost 6-4, 6-1 to Patrick Buchanan, and junior Jamie Kish fell 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (16-14) to Ben Hatten.

The Boilermakers lost three doubles matches to Michigan, with the pairs of Foster and Koziell, Chatterjee and Kish, and Robinson and Warner falling to their Wolverine opponents.

Despite the day's losses, Madden believes his young team is learning important lessons.

"Today we didn't win many matches," Madden said. "Sometimes you have to learn the hard way, but we're learning. The main thing is that we have to come ready to compete."

Play at the 17th-annual Tom Fallon Invitational will conclude Sunday. Complete results can be found at www.und.com.
