INDIANAPOLIS - The Boilermaker softball team put together 10 hits en route to toppling intrastate rival IUPUI 7-1 in Game 1 of the Wednesday doubleheader. The victory secured Purdue its fifth consecutive 30 win season as the team moved to 30-22 overall. The Boilermakers have put together 30-win seasons in seven of the last eight years.
Purdue scored first with a pair of runs in the second on three hits and a walk. Jaguar pitcher Stacey Lear walked Jesse Jones to lead off the inning. Andrea Roush then reached on a fielder's choice and stole second. Designated player Laura Martin picked up the RBI with a double into right center field. Kristen Schell flew out to center field, but the ball was deep enough to move Martin to third. Junior Angela Knight rolled a shot up the middle to score Martin and give Purdue a 2-0 lead. Freshman Tricia Lilley singled to right center and Angi Roembke reached on an error to load the bases, but a fly ball save IUPUI from further damage.
Lear walked Roush with two out in the third to start another Boilermaker rally. Roush stole second and came home on another double by Martin, this time to left field. Martin moved to third on a wild pitch by reliever Amy Odinsoff. Schell added another run with a single to left.
In the fourth inning, sophomore Andrea Hillsey knocked a one-out single past the second baseman, then stole second. Jones walked with two outs, then the team pulled off a double steal, which wound up scoring a run as the catcher overthrew third trying to catch Hillsey.
The Boilermakers capped their scoring with two runs in the sixth. Lilley picked up a bunt single, then Roembke reached on a fielder's choice before adding to her school record steal tally by swiping second. Hillsey drove her in with her second triple of the day, which tied a single-game record in the category. Her first, a shot to right center, was the lone hit in the opening stanza. Hillsey scored on a two-out wild pitch.
After tallying just one hit in the first six innings, the Jaguars broke through with a solidly hit double to center field. After a pair of ground outs, the runner Brandy Moser stood on third. An error by the Purdue shortstop on the following play allowed Moser to score, but a ground out sealed the Boilermaker victory at 7-1.
Hillsey went 2-for-3 with two triples, one RBI and two runs scored, while Knight went 2-for-2 with a pair of singles. Martin was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles. Purdue tallied 10 hits in the game, marking the 17th time this season the team has reached double digits. The Boilermakers are 17-1 in those contests. The team also stole five bases in the contest.
Burke moved to 18-11 with the victory, while Lear dropped to 1-2 with the loss.
