INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Purdue track and field team wrapped up its busy weekend at the Butler Invitational on Saturday afternoon and evening. Several Boilermakers competed in 23 events.
The day was highlighted by junior Tiffany Britten, sophomore Kern Woods, junior Scott Hecht and sophomore John Paul Smolenski, who each won their respective event.
Britten won the women's shot put after a toss of 13.63 meters.
Woods won the men's long jump after a mark of 7.02 meters. Teammate Matt Simmons placed fourth after a jump of 6.3 meters.
Hecht won the men's shot put competition with a toss of 17.73. Senior Chris White captured second after a throw of 15.88 meters. Continuing the Boilermakers' dominance in the field events, Smolenski won the hammer throw after a heave of 60.53 meters. Hecht was the event's runner-up after a throw of 60.27.
The men took third and fourth in the discus throw. White placed third after a toss of 46.60 and Hecht placed fourth after a mark of 44.86.
A number of underclassmen on the women's side had its share of success as well. Freshman DaVida Anderson placed 14th in the women's 100-meter dash after a time of 12.97. Freshman Jennifer Hamman placed 18th in the event after a 13.04. Anderson also took 16th in the 200-meter dash after running the event in 26.42.
Freshman Courtney Cleveland placed fourth in the women's 800-meter run after a time of 2:19.49. Sophomore Amy Lang took ninth with a time of 2:24.98.
In the women's 1,500-meter run, sophomore Christian Bahler placed eighth after a time of 4:47.87 and senior Mia Burki finished 13th with a 4:54.59.
Three Boilermakers ran in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase. Sophomore Caitlin Baird placed third after a time of 11:27.35. Freshmen Kaleena Cappel and Laura Brandner placed fourth and 10th with times of 11:27.74 and 12:04.43.
Freshman Laura Stier tied for sixth in the high jump after a mark of 5-04.00. Freshman Megan Darraugh and sophomore Jaclyn Schifino competed in the women's pole vault. Darraugh placed sixth (10-07.00) and Schifino took eight place (10-01.00).
Britten followed her first-place finish in the women's shot put by claiming eighth place in the discus after a toss of 34.41 meters. She also placed fifth in the hammer throw after a mark of 44.26. Junior Courtney Magnuson finished fourth in the hammer after a throw of 46.12.
In the men's 200-meter dash, freshman Dedrick Tillerson placed third after a 21.71. Junior Bradley Bolyard took 15th after a time of 22.42. Bolyard then finished ninth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.95.
Sophomore Jonathan Hoggatt placed 17th in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:07.60. In the 5,000-meter run, junior Jason Carlson and freshman Billy Morgan placed fifth and sixth with times of 15:23.53 and 15:29.09.
Four Boilermakers competed in the men's 110-meter hurdles. Senior Prentice Stovall finished second after a 14.00. Woods placed fourth after a time of 14.49. Simmons took seventh after a 14.67 and Tillerson placed ninth with a 14.89.
Tillerson then claimed fourth in the 400-meter hurdles after a time of 54.25. Junior Nick Bruckbauer placed fifth in the 3000-meter steeplechase after a time of 9:33.56. Freshman Michael Jacob took ninth place after a 9:56.46.
Freshman pole vaulter Brian Laguire tied for sixth after a high mark of 14-00.00.
