KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Track and field assistant coach Carri Long may be two years removed from her glory days as an All-American high jumper at Purdue; however, that did not prevent her from easily winning the high jump title Friday afternoon at the Sea Ray Relays.
Long, competing as a member of the Indiana Invaders Track Club, reached a height of 1.77 meters (5 feet, 9 3/4 inches), beating out runner-up Janet Crawford of Kentucky by a full two feet (1.72, 5-7 3/4). As a student-athlete, Long earned four All-America citations in the high jump and two Big Ten championships. Since graduating in May of 2000, she has competed at the Olympic trials, the World University Games and the United States Track and Field Championships.
Coach Long's prot?g?, Carrie Long, a local product from West Lafayette's Harrison High School, achieved an eighth-place height of 1.67 meters (5-5 3/4) and teammate Laura Stier placed 20th at 1.57 meters (5-1 3/4).
Prentice Stovall improved on his season best in the 110 meter hurdles, recording an NCAA Regional Championship qualifying time of 14.19 seconds. Stovall's previous best was 14.82 seconds, which he recorded at Purdue's Rankin Track and Field. The senior led three of his teammates to the finish line, including Matt Simmons (33rd - 14.92), Dedrick Tillerson (34th - 14.99) and Kern Woods (37th - 15.11).
Stovall's relay teammates Kenneth Baxter and Jacques Reeves placed 18th and 21st, respectively, in the 100 meter dash. Baxter recorded a season best time of 10.72 seconds and Reeves crossed the line in 10.84 seconds.
Both sprinters finished nicely in the 200 meter dash. Baxter placed fifth, with an NCAA Regional qualifying time of 21.11 seconds, and Reeves finished 10th at 21.33 seconds. Their times are the fastest for Purdue this season.
In the men's open discus, Scott Hecht placed second with a launch of 48.33 meters (158-7) and Chris White recorded a season best distance of 47.02 meters (154-03).
