The Boilermakers, the designated visiting team in Game 2, got things started in the first inning, scoring on a Heidi Foster sky-high infield double paired with a bunt single by Angi Roembke.
They tacked on another pair of runs in the third as Roembke tallied her first extra base hit of the season with a lead-off double down the rightfield line. The senior tabbed her second run of the game on a sacrifice attempt by sophomore Andrea Hillsey. Hillsey reached base on a botched throw by the first baseman and Roembke scored from second on the miscue. Hillsey stole second and advanced to third on a ground ball by Foster before crossing the plate on a Jesse Jones RBI single to left field.
Purdue did more damage in the fourth scoring four runs on four hits. Freshman Lauren Devich started the Boilermakers march on the bases with a single down the left field line. Junior Angela Knight then took a hit for the team from pitcher Katie Layne. Freshman Tricia Lilley's ground out moved into scoring position, before Roembke knocked a single to center to drive in Staci Falzon, who was running for Devich. Hillsey's bat then brought in three runs with a homerun over the left field fence, just barely inside the foul pole.
The Boilermakers made it 8-0 with a run in the top of the sixth after a trio of singles loaded the bases for Andrea Roush. Roush launched a sacrifice fly to right field, driving in Hillsey from third.
Relief pitcher Angela Kirshberg, who took the loss in Game 1, spoiled Purdue's bid for a shortened game, sending a solo homer down the left field line.
The seventh inning went quickly as it took only seven batters between the teams to end the inning. Freshman Diana LaRiva struck out six en route to the win, while Layne took the loss for the Badgers.
Hillsey went 2-for-3 with three RBI and three runs scored, while Roembke was 3-for-5 with an RBI and three runs scored. Devich went 4-for-5 on the day including a 3-for-4 effort in Game 2.
"This was an outstanding team performance in very adverse conditions," head coach Carol Bruggeman said. "Leighann and Diana were warriors today and pitching is the most difficult position to play on a day like today. Our defense was also solid when it needed to be.
"Offensively, we had 20 hits against a tough Wisconsin pitching staff led by Angela Kirchberg, who is one of the top pitchers in our conference. We were led by Andrea Hillsey, who was solid at the plate all day. We also made great hustle plays today, running out fly balls, etc., and I am very proud of that. Anytime you can sweep a Big Ten opponent, it is a good day."
The Boilermakers will take a stab at that task again Sunday when they play host to Minnesota.
