WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Notre Dame kept its momentum going in Game 2 of the doubleheader with seven runs on 10 hits, including a home run, in a 7-1 downing of the Boilermaker softball team. Purdue left 13 runners aboard in the contest.
The Irish struck first with a RBI single by Andria Bledsoe, who tapped Purdue with a grand slam in the first game of the day. Bledsoe's hit to right field scored Andrea Loman from third. Loman was hit by a pitch then advanced to second on a passed ball and third on a wild pitch.
Two more runs came in the second stanza on a pair of doubles and a bunt single. Alexis Madrid recorded the two-run double with two outs in the inning. She drove in Mallorie Lenn, who singled, and Megan Ciolli, who doubled to center. A pair of unearned scores came in the third as Loman reached on an error, then Liz Hartmann lifted a two-out long shot over the left field wall.
The margin grew to six in the sixth inning as Kellie Middleton took advantage of the 15-to-25 mph winds and jacked a home run to left field. Notre Dame tacked on a final run in the seventh on a Lisa Mattison single through the right side scored Hartmann, who had doubled to center.
Purdue finally got on the board in the bottom of the seventh after leaving runners aboard in each of the previous six innings. Senior Heidi Foster spoiled the Fighting Irish's shutout bid with a two-out home run to left center, her eighth of the year.
The Boilermakers will regroup and look to end the current four-game draught against conference foe Wisconsin in a single game on Friday. The first pitch is set for 3 p.m.
