KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The Purdue baseball team won for the thrid consecutive time and the fourth time in five games, defeating the Tennessee Volunteers in ten innings 6-5. With the win in Knoxville, the Boilermakers improve to 8-4 while Tennessee drops to 11-8.
With the score tied 5-5 heading into extra innings, singles by Daniel Underwood and Simon Klink put runners on the corners and set up John Manuel, whose sacrifice fly to center field scored Underwood with the winning run.
The Boilermakers built an early 5-2 lead, scoring a run in the first, three in the second and one in the third. Tennessee fought back in the late innings, scoring a run in the eighth and tied the game with a two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning.
In the opening inning, Andy Rempel started the game with a double to left field and moved to third on a throwning error by Joey Andrews, the UT pitcher. A sacrifice fly off the bat of Nick McIntyre scored Rempel with the Boilermakers' first run.
Three more Boilermaker runs were tacked on in the second on three hits. Brad Kriner and Ben Fritz singled before Mitch Koester's base hit loaded the bases. Rempel was hit by a pitch, forcing home Kriner with the second Purdue run. Another free run was added when McIntyre drew a walk, forcing Andrews from the mound. Underwood sent a sacrifice fly to right to score Koester and increase Purdue's lead to 4-0.
After a run in the bottom of the second by the Vols, Klink began the third with a base on balls. With one out, Kriner bunted Klink into scoring position and a single by Eric Wolfe scored the Purdue third baseman for a 5-1 lead.
Tennessee scored in the third and eighth, and the two-run homer in the ninth tied the score and sent the game into extra frames.
Underwoood singled to start the tenth and went to third on Klink base hit to right. Manuel skied a fly ball to center, scoring Underwood from third with the winning run.
The Boilermakers used five pitchers in the win, with Dustin Glant earning the win after pitching the ninth and tenth innings. Glant is now 1-0.
Purdue stays on the road for two more games, traveling to Oxford, Ohio for games with Miami (Ohio) on Friday and Saturday. The Friday contest is scheduled for 3 p.m. with a 1 p.m. start on Saturday. The two teams will play at 2 p.m. on Sunday in the Boilermakers' home opener.
