LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Purdue's bats finally arrived in Ulmer Stadium in Game 2 of the Boilermakers' doubleheader with Louisville, as the Old Gold and Black tallied 13 hits in a 9-3 win to split the day with the Cardinals, who won Game 1, 2-0.
Senior Jesse Jones broke the game open for the Boilermakers with a grand slam, the team's third in 2003, in the fifth. Jones scored pinch runner Cheryl Buergler, right fielder Angela Knight and third baseman Lauren Devich to put Purdue up 7-3. Senior Heidi Foster doubled and Buergler replaced her at second base. Knight walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch as Buergler moved to third. Devich walked to load the bases, setting up the Jones round tripper. Up to that point, it had been a back-and-forth battle. Senior Angi Roembke capitalized on a short throw by the pitcher to start the inning and put the tying run aboard. Roembke scored on the Foster double, which was the last hit allowed by starter Krystle Herold before reliever Jessica Rak came in.
The Boilermakers capped the game with two more runs in the sixth as Rak hit freshman Tricia Lilley to start the inning. Roembke tabbed a bunt single. Sophomore Andrea Hillsey followed with a ground out to move the runners into scoring position. Foster walked to load the bases. Knight singled to right to score Lilley, then Devich knocked in Roembke with an RBI single.
The Cardinals put together a three-hit fourth inning to take a 3-2 lead. Sara Bauscher bounced a double off the left field fence to start the rally. Freshman pitcher Diana LaRiva walked Lisa Estes, then Aja Sherman singled to load the bases. Lisa McMillan singled to right field to score Bauscher from third. Estes tried to score from second on the play but was tagged out in a run-down. Knight tossed the ball to cutoff man Foster who set up the run down as Devich trapped Estes between herself and catcher Jesse Jones who made the tag.
Devich singled to the second baseman in start the top of the fourth, but was out at second as designated player Becky Stone hit into a fielder's choice. Center fielder Staci Falzon rocketed a deep ball to the right field warning track for an RBI triple to tie the game at two.
Lacy Wood launched a two-run shot over the left field fence in the third inning, scoring McMillan, who opened the inning with a single up the first base line.
Hillsey and Foster found a hole in the middle of the Cardinal outfield, recording back-to-back two-out singles to put a run on the board in the first stanza. Hillsey struck first and stole second, setting up an RBI opportunity for Foster, who delivered.
Devich went 3-for-3 in the game and Foster was 2-for-2 with two walks, a single and a double. Purdue scored nine runs on 13 hits while committing no errors. Louisville had three runs on eight hits and one error.
Reliever Leighann Burke took the win with 3.1 innings of shutout ball, while Herold dropped to 0-4 with the Louisville loss. Sherman closed out the game for the Cardinal allowing just one hit in the seventh inning.
