FULLERTON, Calif. - Purdue couldn't stop No. 4 Washington's hot bats as the Huskies hit five home runs in an 11-0 victory over the Boilermakers in day three action at the Worth Invitational.
The Huskies hit back-to-back two-out home runs in the first as senior Jaime Clark knocked one to center field and Kristen Rivera sent one over the left field fence. They tacked on three more runs in the third as Rivera knocked a three-run shot to center to drive in pinch runner Callie Bergan and Clark, who singled to left center. Bergan was running for Rita Roach who tabbed a base hit to center field. Kathy Fiske flied out to end the inning.
UW continued to dominate, scoring six runs on four hits and an error in the bottom of the fourth. Sarah Hyatt reached on an error by the third baseman, then starter Leighann Burke walked Aimee Minor to give the Huskies two base runners before exiting the game. Sophomore Shelli Messer caught a Megan Owen foul ball for the first out of the inning. Dena Tyson doubled to center to score Hyatt from second. Amanda Oleson singled up the middle to score Minor from third. The second out came as Rita Roach hit a fielder's choice to short stop Tricia Lilley, who fired the ball to catcher Jesse Jones to punch out Tyson at home. Clark then cleared the bases with a three-run shot to right center. Rivera completed the hat trick with a solo bomb to left center, before Fiske grounded out to bring up the Boilermakers.
Purdue tallied three hits in the game and left six runners aboard. Senior Angi Roembke went 2-for-2 with a bunt single and a base-hit to second base. Andrea Hillsey recorded the Boilermakers' only other hit with a single up the middle to open the game.
Washington had 11 runs on nine hits with no errors, while Purdue had no runs on three hits while committing one error.
The Boilermakers will try to regroup before facing Central Michigan, at 10 a.m. Friday at the Speedline Invitational in Tampa, Fla.
