IOWA CITY, Iowa - Willie Deane scored 21 points and Kenneth Lowe sank three late free throws to give Purdue an 80-77 overtime victory over Iowa, putting the Boilermakers into first place in the Big Ten.
Brandon Mcknight hit a baseline jumper with 29 seconds left in overtime to give Purdue (14-4, 6-1 Big Ten) a 78-76 lead, their first lead of the second half. Lowe, who sent the game into overtime with a free throw with seven seconds left, hit two more with 13.4 seconds in overtime to stretch the lead to three.
Iowa (11-6, 3-3) had a chance to tie, but Chauncey Leslie's 3-point attempt bounced off the rim with seconds remaining.
The win, coupled with Michigan's loss earlier Saturday at Minnesota, gave Purdue sole possession of first place in the Big Ten for the first time this season. It was the third straight defeat for the Hawkeyes.
Iowa, which was playing without leading rebounder Jared Reiner, had five players score in double figures. The Hawkeyes led by as many as many as 12 in the second half, after opening the final 20 minutes with a 17-8 run.
But the Boilermakers stiffened on defense, and a 3-pointer by Lowe at 8:46 tied the game.
The Hawkeyes answered, and went up 73-66 on a 3-pointer by Leslie with 4:06 to go.
But Mcknight, who took only two shots and was hampered by foul trouble much of the game, hit a jumper with 1:36 to cut Iowa's lead to 74-73. Lowe's free throw tied it at 74 at the end of regulation.
Chris Booker scored 17 for Purdue and Darmetreis Kilgore added 10, as the Boilermakers shot 51 percent for the game.
Iowa was led by Jeff Horner, who scored 17 points and dished out six assists. Brody Boyd added 16 and Glen Worley chipped in 15 as the Hawkeyes shot 41.7 percent.
Iowa built leads of 12-3 and 30-20 with 7:30 left in the half. Horner and Worley led the charge, scoring 16 of the Hawkeyes' first 19 points.
But the Boilermakers took advantage of Iowa foul trouble, picked up the pace and went on a 13-2 run. A jumper by Kilgore gave Purdue its first lead at 33-32 with 2:40 to go.
But Iowa reclaimed the lead moments later and took the momentum into the locker room when Horner swished a long 3-pointer just before the buzzer. Worley led all scorers at the break with 12 points but played just eight minutes.
