No. 16 Women's Swimming & Diving Completes Two Meets In Hawaii

HONOLULU, Hawaii - The No. 16 Purdue women's swimming and diving team competed in the Duke Kahanamoku Sprint Meet on Friday, Jan. 3, and the Aileen Soule Classic on Saturday, Jan. 4, at the Rainbow Invitational, hosted by the University of Hawai'i,. Although the meets were not scored, the Boilermakers finished approximately first of 15 teams on the first day and first of eight teams on the second day. The non-scored meets gave the Purdue women a chance to strengthen their skills, continue their winter training regime and improve their individual top times on the season.

The Purdue women began the day on Friday with a first-place finish in the 200 medley relay from seniors Lisa Dolansky, Patricia Finnerty, Lindsay Lange and Kim Paradeise with a time of 1:45.58. The Purdue 'B' team of Tracy Duchac, Brandy Keever, Lindsay Kirchoff and Autumn Sample finished in 1:48.17 for fourth place and the 'C' team came in seventh with Karina Bolanos, Jill Collins, Lydia DeNuccio and Ashley Koehn.

Lange started her individual accomplishments of the day with a victory in the 100 breaststroke in 1:04.17, while Kirchoff, Bolanos, Jenni Bean, Yvonne Laaper and Kristen Melville swam to finishes of sixth, seventh, eighth, 10th, and 15th.

Purdue followed up with another win in the 50 butterfly by Finnerty with a time of 26.36, while Sample, Sara Hayworth and Lindsey Meier were not far behind. Sample came in fourth, Hayworth was sixth and Meier finished 10th.

Dolansky also tallied her first individual victory of the day in the 100 backstroke with a time of 56.83. Keever came in sixth, and Shannon Funk followed in ninth. DeNuccio rounded out the top 10 and Meier came in 11th. Koehn, Hayworth and Laaper also swam for finishes of 13, 14 and 21.

Duchac was the Purdue top finisher in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.00 for second place. Paradeise came in fourth and Katie Seleskie came in seventh, while Jill Collins came in 30th.

Freshman Erica Chandler earned her first first-place finish of the day in the 200 free with a time of 1:49.96 to beat out two Wisconsin rivals. Christine Leupold came in fourth, Bean finished sixth, Laaper was eighth and Funk finished out the top 10 again. Also swimming in the 200 free were Meier in 13th, Melville in 16th and Collins in 18th.

Sample earned her first individual victory of the weekend in the 100 fly with a time of 57.44, a season-best. Finnerty was right behind to give the Boilermakers the 1-2 punch and DeNuccio finished in fifth place. Hayworth, Chandler, Laaper and Koehn also swam the event for eighth-, ninth-, tenth- and 17th-place finishes.

Lange repeated as a winner in the 50 breaststroke with a time of 30.14. Kirchoff came in fourth, Bolanos was fifth and Melville finished 10th.

In the 100 individual medley race, Jenni Bean was the top Purdue finisher in third with a time of 59.15. Leupold finished fifth, Sample came in sixth and Funk was eighth. Kirchoff, Finnerty, Chandler and Bolanos followed for 10th through 13th places.

Dolansky took away another victory in the 50 backstroke with a time of 26.52, while Keever was fourth, Koehn was eighth and Hayworth came in 10th.

Duchac was Purdue's best finisher in the 100 free with a time of 52.61, while Paradeise came in fourth. Leupold followed in fifth, Seleskie came in sixth and Funk finished 10th. Meier and Collins came in 15th and 20th, respectively.

Friday's final event of the evening was the 10x50 500 freestyle relay in which Dolansky led off for a second-place Purdue finish behind the Wisconsin Badgers. Swimming the second through eighth legs were Lange, Leupold, Duchac, Bean, Keever, Chandler and DeNuccio.

On Saturday at the Aileen Soule Classic, the distance swimmers had more chances to participate in the events than on Friday, while keeping the meet unscored.

The same four women started the day off with a victory in the 400 medley relay that won the 200 medley relay. With a time of 3:54.66, the 'A' squad of Dolansky, Finnerty, Lange and Paradeise finished just ahead of the 'B' squad of Duchac, Keever, Kirchoff and Sample. The 'B' team finished with a time of 3:57.33.

Chandler won the 1000 freestyle by three seconds over Hawai'i's Jessica Affleck for a time of 10:07.46. Laaper, Funk and Leupold gave the Boilermakers more strong finishes in the distance race with third, fourth and fifth. Meier came in 10th and Melville capped the Purdue swimmers at 12th.

In the 200 free race, Bean, Leupold and Paradeise tallied a 1-2-3 Purdue sweep, while DeNuccio and Melville added sixth- and 10th-place finishes and Collins and Bolanos came in 14th and 17th.

Dolansky led the Purdue women in the 50 free with a victory in 24.32, while the Boilermakers' Paradeise, Duchac, Lange, Seleskie, Keever, Finnerty and Koehn finished 3-4-7-8-9-10 and 18th.

Bean repeated as winner in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:07.52, while Sample followed her in in 2:08.78. Chandler was not far behind for fourth place and Laaper, Kirchoff and Bolanos finished out the Purdue lineup in sixth, ninth and 13th.

Sample swam to another first-place finish in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:06.15, while Finnerty came in fourth, Hayworth finished sixth and DeNuccio came in seventh. Koehn finished 12th.

Bean earned another first-place finish in the 100 freestyle with a time of 52.91 and Leupold added the second-place Purdue finish with a time of 53.48, while Seleskie came in third in 53.67. Lange, Duchac, Kirchoff and Collins added Purdue depth in the 100 with finishes of seventh, ninth, 12th and 19th, respectively.

In the 200 backstroke, the Boilermakers took second, third, fifth, eighth, 12th and 13th with Dolansky, Keever, Sample, Hayworth, DeNuccio and Koehn.

Chandler tallied another individual win in the 500 free with a time of 4:58.15, while Funk and Laaper followed in third and fourth. Leupold, Meier, Hayworth, Melville and Collins added depth again, with finishes of sixth, eighth, 11th, 12th and 13th.

The 200 breaststroke was the final individual event of the day with Lange finishing second as Purdue's top finisher. Her time of 2:23.53 came behind Washington State's Jane Copland at 2:20.26. Kirchoff, Laaper, Bean, Bolanos and Seleskie finished fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and ninth.

The Boilermaker women ended the meet just as solidly as they started, taking both first and second in the 400 freestyle relay race. The 'A' team of Chandler, Dolansky, Duchac and Paradeise finished in 3:33.16, while the 'B' team of Finnerty, Hayworth, Koehn and Seleskie came in with a time of 3:40.12.

The women will wrap up their dual meet season with their final Big Ten meet of the year against Indiana at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center on Saturday, Jan. 18, at 1 p.m. The meet will be the senior class' final home dual meet and the Boilermakers will celebrate Senior Day.
