The 21st-ranked Purdue women's golf team finished the first day of the 2002 NCAA Preview tied for seventh place with Florida, with an 18-hole score of 300.
Seventh-ranked Oklahoma State is in first place with an even-par 288. Vanderbilt, ranked 13th, is in second with a 290. The fifth-ranked Texas Longhorns, the 2001 NCAA Preview champion, are third with a 293. Rounding out the top five are No. 2 Duke (297) and No. 4 Ohio State (298).
Karin Sjodin, a freshman from Oklahoma State, is the individual leader with a four-under par 68.
The Boilermakers are hosting the 18-team tournament at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex, which will be the site of the NCAA Championship in May 2003. The Kampen Golf Course is a par 72, measuring 6,225 yards.
Leading the way for the Boilermakers were seniors Kari Damron and Heather Zielinski, both tied for fifth. Damron got off to a rough start, recording three bogeys on her first three holes. She birdied the next three, however, and finished with a one-under-par 71. Through 18 holes, Damron tallied seven birdies to overcome six bogeys.
"I had an extremely up-and-down game today," Damron said. "I knew I could do it; I've done it before. I just had to put it behind me and look ahead and play golf."
Zielinski matched her classmate with a 71 on her home course. She made three birdies on the day, including two within the first four holes.
"I felt really comfortable today," Zielinski said. "It's just one of those days when I finally put it all together. Obviously there were lots of people out there watching, and that makes it a lot of fun."
Purdue head coach Devon Brouse complimented his leaders.
"Kari Damron making seven birdies is quite a statement," Brouse said. "To make seven birdies in a round of golf on this course is pretty impressive. Heather (Zielinski) started her senior year off with a 71. That's impressive as well. We got the two really good rounds we needed from those two."
Junior Ella Asbun, in her first year after transferring from Vanderbilt, shot a 76 and is tied for 37th. Junior Beth Hermes and senior Heather Suhr, a transfer from Iowa, both carded 82s and are tied for 74th.
Looking ahead to the final two rounds, Brouse expects the other Boilermakers to respond.
"This is a solid start," Brouse said. "Hopefully tomorrow we can get two more good rounds and back them up with some more solid rounds, which we didn't quite do today. But if we do that, we'll have a good team score."
Purdue will tee off at 8 a.m., on Monday, Sept. 16.
