COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Purdue men's golf team finished seventh at the NCAA Men's Golf Championships in Columbus, Ohio.
The Boilermakers fired a final-round 281, 12 strokes lower than their third-round score. They finished with a four-round total 1145.
"I'm really proud of the guys and they way they bounced back today," said coach Devon Brouse. "We really had it rolling today. It was a great finish for us and right now we are very happy with how we finished this season."
Minnesota claimed the 2002 Men's Golf National Championship with a four-round score of 1134.
"It was a great day for the conference," said Brouse. "What Minnesota did speaks volumes for what we are trying to accomplish with Big Ten golf."
Big Ten Player of the Year and All-America candidate Lee Williamson fired a final-round 70 in his last collegiate event. He tied for 27th place with a four-day total of 1145.
"We had a great day and it turned out to be very exciting," said Williamson. "I'm very proud of my teammates and I feel like it was a great season overall. I'm really happy for our team and know they will have success again next season."
Sophomore Shiv Kapur carded the lowest round on Saturday for the Boilermakers. He had a final-round 67 and tied for 13th. He had a four-round total of 282.
"I got off to a really good start today," said Kapur. "I think I played really solid and I'm really satisfied for our round. We talked about this being Lee's last round and we wanted to play well and give him a great sendoff. I think we gave him a great farewell gift with a top-ten finish at the national championships."
Freshman Dustin Cone is tied for 63rd with a total of 291. He carded a final-round, even-par 71.
Junior Chris Mayson, who placed second at the NCAA Central Regional, fired a final-round 73 and tied for 80th with a four-day total of 293.
Junior Peter Karmis carded a final-round 79 and tied for 145th with a final-round total of 304.
This is the second-straight season that the Boilermakers have advanced to the NCAA Championships. The Boilermakers finished 28th at the 2001 NCAA Championships.
The event was held at the 7,236-yard, par-71 Scarlet Course on the Ohio State campus.
