SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Junior Leighann Burke fired a one-hitter as the Purdue softball team shut out No. 27 Texas 1-0 at the UT-San Antonio Fastpitch Classic on Saturday afternoon.
The Boilermakers (5-4) later lost to No. 17 Southwest Texas State 5-2 to drop their tournament record to 2-2 heading into Sunday's final day of competition. Purdue will take on Bethune Cookman at 8:30 a.m. and host UT-San Antonio at 10:30 a.m.
In the opener, Burke allowed merely a one-out, first-inning single while striking out five and walking two.
"Leighann was awesome," Purdue coach Carol Bruggeman said. "Texas is a very good team, and she pitched her best game of the season. She consistently kept their batters off balance and was in control all day."
The Boilermakers scored the only run they would need in the third inning. Left fielder Angi Roembke reached on an error, stole second and scored when Heidi Foster's ground ball to the shortstop was mishandled at first base. Purdue beat freshman Catherine Osterman, who was the high school National Player of the Year in 2001 and earlier this season had a 16-strikeout performance. The Boilermakers collected three hits, one each by Roembke, catcher Jesse Jones and center fielder Andrea Roush, who had two stolen bases.
Against Southwest Texas, the Boilermakers banged out eight hits but left eight runners on base. Megan Dooley was saddled with the loss after allowing three runs in 1 2/3 innings of relief.
"We had a ton of chances but couldn't come up with the big hit," Bruggeman said. "It was a dogfight."
