Men's Golf In Eighth Place After First Day Of Gator Invitational

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The Purdue men's golf team is in eighth place after the first day of the Gator Invitational in Gainesville, Fla.

Two, 18-hole rounds were played on Saturday in the 15-team event hosted by the University of Florida. The Boilermakers fired a first-round 292 and then shot a 285 in the second round.

The Boilermakers were led by junior Chris Mayson, who carded a 140 and stands tied for ninth. Sophomore Shiv Kapur fired a 144 and stands tied for 21st place. Freshman Dustin Cone is tied for 32nd place after a two-round total of 146. Senior Lee Williamson shot a 147 and junior Peter Karmis totaled a 150.

"We got solid play out of Chris Mayson and Shiv Kapur," said assistant coach Andrew Sapp. "We improved from the first round to the second round and now we want that to carry over into Sunday."

The University of Alabama-Birmingham leads after two rounds with a 556. The Boilermakers, who stand at 577, are merely seven strokes behind Georgia State (570) for fifth place.

The event's final round of 18 holes will begin tomorrow at 8 a.m. EST.
