Boilermaker Men's Swimming Fares Well On Holiday Training Trip

Dec. 21, 2001

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The Purdue men's swimming team competed today in a quad-meet while on its Holiday Training Trip. The Boilermakers defeated both Cincinnati and Florida Atlantic, while falling to Texas A&M.

"I thought we did well today," said Purdue men's head swimming coach Dan Ross. "We are banged up, since we did come down here to train. The guys are pretty tired, especially since we swam over 15,000 yards yesterday and I know that affected the way we swam today. The team did a good job of competing and Texas A&M had a few too many sprinters for us to keep up with. But overall, I'm very satisfied with what we did today and we took away a couple of event wins in the process."

The meet was scored as a tri-dual meet, with each school's score going head-to-head against the other three individual schools. The Boilermakers defeated Florida Atlantic 166-96 and Cincinnati 184-78, while falling to Texas A&M, 155-107. Taking wins for Purdue were freshman Rion Epping in the 1,000 free, senior Javier Diaz in the 200 IM and sophomore Tamas Bessenyei in the 100 breaststroke.

The Boilermakers will return home on Sunday, Dec. 23, and will then break until Jan. 2, 2002. They will return to the competition pool on Jan. 12, 2002, when they host Michigan State.
