WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - John Allison scored 20 points and had 11 rebounds and Willie Deane added 12 points as Purdue beat Xavier 70-66 Wednesday night.
The Musketeers (3-2) shot only 35 percent from the floor and missed 10 of their first 12 shots of the second half.
The Boilermakers (5-2) didn't fare much better, shooting 30 percent in the first half, often missing easy layups. They improved in the second, making nine of their first 18 shots to turn a two-point halftime lead into a 51-39 game midway through the second half.
David West was the lone bright spot for Xavier, scoring 31 points and grabbing 15 rebounds. He was 9-for-13 from the floor, made 12 of 16 free throws and scored his 1,000th career point.
Xavier went on an 8-1 run, capped by two free throws by Jaison Williams, to take a 55-54 lead with 3:47 left in the game.
Deane converted a 3-point play, Allison hit a jumper and Maynard Lewis grabbed a rebound and went the length of the floor for a layup to put the Boilermakers ahead 61-56.
West and Kevin Frey made two straight baskets, and it was 63-60 with 40 seconds left.
Deane made two free throws, then stole the ball on the next possession and made two more free throws to seal the win. Deane then had another steal and finished the fast break with an alley-oop to Rodney Smith.
Darmetreis Kilgore added 11 points for Purdue
Allison, who scored 25 points on 10 of 11 shooting against Oakland, Mich., on Sunday, made his first five shots against Xavier and finished 7-for-10. He also made 6 of 7 free throws.
Frey had 12 points for Xavier.
Purdue led 28-21 late in the first half but seven straight points by West evened the score. Lewis hit a 3-pointer to put the Boilermakers ahead and they led 32-30 at halftime.
