WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) - Rodney Smith scored 17 points and had nine rebounds and John Allison added 12 points as Purdue beat William & Mary 75-58 Friday in the first round of the Boilermaker Invitational.
Purdue (3-2) went on a 19-5 run to the second half, getting 3-pointers from Smith and Darmetreis Kilgore, who scored 11. The Boilermakers eventually stretched the lead to 23 points, 68-45, with just less than seven minutes left in the game.
William & Mary (2-5) never got closer than 14, 70-56, after a Nick D'Antoni 3-pointer.
The Tribe went to the free-throw line only once in the first half and made 8 of 18 overall. The Boilermakers were 9-for-22 from the free-throw line.
Thomas Viglianco and Mike Johnson each scored 13 points for William & Mary. Eleven of Purdue's 12 players scored.
After getting outrebounded in their first three games, Purdue has held an edge on the boards each of the last two, including 37-27 against the Tribe.
Purdue's biggest first-half lead was 30-23 after consecutive 3-pointers by Austin Parkinson and Smith. Viglianco hit a 3 to cut the gap and the Tribe trailed 33-28 at the half.
Oakland, Mich. beat Akron 71-64 in the first game of the Boilermaker Invitational. The consolation game is noon Sunday while the championship game is at 2:30 p.m.
The Boilermakers are 20-1 all-time in the invitational. They have won nine of 10 titles, with Wisconsin-Green Bay winning in 1991.
