Soccer Earns Final Victory Of Regular Season Play

Nov. 2, 2001

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - The Purdue women's soccer team finished its regular season schedule with a final win on the road at Central Michigan today, 2-0. It was the Boilermakers' seventh shutout of the year and takes their record to 10-5-3, as they head to the first round of the Big Ten Tournament.

"I didn't think that today was our best performance of the year at all," said Purdue head coach Rob Klatte. "We struggled to get into the game and establish ourselves, in order to dictate the flow of the game, we had to defend for quite some time and I thought our defenders did a good job in the back.

"Unfortunately up front, we had quite a few chances and didn't finish on many of them. But, there were some positives in today's game, I asked the women for 10 shots on-goal and a shutout. We tallied nine shots on-goal and we did get the win with a shutout. So, we did do what we set out to do, but we just didn't do it convincingly. There are some issues that we will need to address in training this week before we play Ohio State and we will begin to work on those right away tomorrow."

Scoring first for the Boilermakers to end her scoring slump was sophomore forward Courtney Coppedge at the 11:11 mark on a pass from freshman Lauren Sesselmann. It was Coppedge's fifth goal of the year and Sesselmann's sixth assist.

Sophomore forward Annette Kent topped off the Boilermaker score with an insurance goal at the 82:55 mark when she headed in a rebounded shot. It was Kent's eighth goal of the year.

The Boilermakers will return to action when they host the 2001 Big Ten Women's Soccer Tournament next weekend. Fifth-seeded Purdue will take on fourth-seeded Ohio State at 10 a.m. on Thursday at the Varsity Soccer Complex's West Field. The winner of that game will then advance to play the winner of Penn State/Northwestern at 1 p.m. on Friday.
