WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue men's basketball team defeated Washburn, an NCAA Division II powerhouse, 95-84 on Sunday in the final exhibition game of the 2001-02 season. Purdue moves to 2-0 in exhibition play.

Purdue head coach Gene Keady acknowledged that Washburn was a good team and provided a challenging test for the Boilermakers.

"We certainly found some of the weaknesses that we knew we had," said Keady. " We have to do a much better job of putting pressure on the ball. We shot the ball extremely well in the first half. It was a good game for us and an eye opener for our kids, and we hope that we learn from it."

Senior John Allison was one of four starting Boilermakers who scored in double figures on the evening. Allison scored 12 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and blocked five shots. Senior Rodney Smith scored 23 points on 7 of 10 shooting. Senior Maynard Lewis had 17 points and four rebounds. Junior Darmetreis Kilgore chipped in 11 points. Sophomore Austin Parkinson started at point guard and dished out a team-high nine assists.

Washburn, who cut the game to under ten points in the final five minutes, got the attention of the Purdue players.

"They are a very good team, but at first I didn't think so," said Lewis. "For us to play them helped us to build confidence for our next game against Valparaiso."

Washburn was led by Manny Clifton who scored 17 points. Center Ryan Murphy had 13 points and 12 rebounds.

The Boilermakers will play their final exhibition game this Sunday, Nov. 11, against Washburn at 4 p.m. in Mackey Arena. The first regular season game is Friday, Nov. 6, at Valparaiso.

Post Game Quotes

Head Coach Gene Keady

On: The basketball game:

"We certainly found some of the weaknesses that we knew we had. We have to do a much better job of putting pressure on the ball. We shot the ball extremely well the first half. It was a good game for us and an eye opener for our kids, and we hope that we learn from it."

On : On Washburn

"They had some seasoned kids that could shoot it. I didn't think our kids respected their shooting like they should have. I think we really have to start respecting the stats more when we give scouting reports."

On : John Allison's play:

"John had a good game. Thirteen rebounds and five blocked shots, I thought those two things alone helped us. I think he needs to score more, but some of that has to do with how we feed him. The system has to get that for him."

Player Quotes

Purdue Center John Allison

On: Defensive play

"We have been working on our defense for a while, but tonight was a sad affair. All coach wanted us to do was have pride in it. Everybody had moments getting to the backdoor to score which easily showed our weaknesses on defense."

On: Team scoring

"I don't think it is a conscious thing. I know we can outscore any team, but we are not out there just to outscore people. We have a well balanced offensive attack."

On: Senior leadership

"Senior leadership is a point emphasized by coach. Sooner or later the seniors will have to realize they have to step up and explain fundamentals to the young guys. It will also take a while down the road for the seniors to adapt to the roles of leadership."

Purdue Guard Maynard Lewis

On: Washburn

"They are a very good team, but at first I didn't think so. For us to play them helped us to build confidence for our next game against Valparaiso."

On: Rebounding and defense

"We got out rebounded by eleven, but we will correct it next time. We all like each other and are ready to listen to each other to get better. No one is selfish and we need to find the defensive man to step up. We have much to work on, but it will be a fun season. We need to go out there and play defense so our younger guys will see that and do that. If we get our team defense down we'll have a fun year."

Purdue Forward Rodney Smith

On: Rebounding and defense

"We all know we can score and it is obvious that the other team exploited our defense. They (people) will see that in the newspapers. This is something the team needs to focus on. We have to get used to running towards the basket and everyone leaking out."
