WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue men's basketball team defeated International Select 108-77 in an exhibition game on Monday night in Mackey Arena. It was the Boilermakers' first exhibition game of the 2001-02 season.

Purdue head coach Gene Keady was happy about his team's 31-point win.

"We certainly have some scoring options," said Keady. "I think we are a more athletic team than we were a year ago. I liked our athleticism and how we ran the floor tonight. Our free throw shooting was a little down and we need to do a better job of rebounding but overall we found some more things out about our team tonight."

Three of five starters were in double figures for the Boilermakers including newcomer Darmetreis Kilgore who led the team in scoring with 22 points. The junior shot 9 of 13 from the floor and was 3 of 5 from behind the arc. Senior Rodney Smith scored 20 points, grabbed seven rebounds and recorded a team-high three steals. Senior Maynard Lewis scored 14 points after going 5 of 10 on the evening.

"I was a little anxious at first out there," said Kilgore, who played his first game as a Boilermaker. "Once I hit a shot it got me going and after that all my nervousness was over. We had so many options out there that its hard for a defense to key on any one person."

The Boilermakers got a spark off the bench from junior Willie Deane who scored 18 points on 8 of 13 shooting. Freshman Matt Carroll hauled in seven rebounds in 16 minutes in a reserve roll.

"It was good to get out there, play hard and get the jitters out," said Deane. "It was a good start for the whole team on the season."

Sophomore Austin Parkinson started at point guard for the Boilermakers and finished with nine points, six rebounds and five assists.

The Boilermakers handed out 21 assists as a team and committed only five turnovers.

"I don't think you can get much better than that," said Keady. "We took care of the ball and did a nice job of getting the ball to people who could score."

Purdue shot 51 percent from the floor and held International Select to just 34.8 percent shooting. The Boilermakers also caused 23 turnovers on the night and blocked 11 shots.

Purdue moves to 1-0 in exhibition play, while International Select is now 0-3 on its tour.

The Boilermakers will play their final exhibition game this Sunday, Nov. 11, against Washburn at 4 p.m. in Mackey Arena. The first regular season game is Friday, Nov. 6, at Valparaiso.
