Women's Swimming & Diving Falls To Notre Dame, Despite Atmosphere

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's swimming and diving team fell this evening, 209.5 - 90.5 to Notre Dame in its first dual meet at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center, despite the great enthusiasm and support of the football team and coaching staff who stopped by to cheer the Boilermaker women on, while giving the Notre Dame team a little jest.

In the first race of the evening, Purdue recorded a season top time in the 400 medley relay with a second-place finish and a time of 3:47.17. Team members Lisa Dolansky, Lindsay Lange, Patricia Finnerty and Kim Paradeise each improved on their split times from the Indiana Intercollegiates meet. Dolansky also recorded a season-best 100 backstroke time of 55.99 on her leg of the race. Teammates Brandy Keever, Lindsay Kirchoff, Karin Stender and Tracy Duchac finished fourth for the Boilermakers with a time of 3:56.82.

In the 1,000 freestyle, Kelly Mackus was Purdue's top finisher in third place with a time of 10:16.15, a season-best time. Teammate Lindsey Meier finished fifth at 10:40.45 and Jenni Bean was seventh with a time of 10:44.46.

The 200 freestyle saw Christine Leupold finish second for the Boilermakers with a time of 1:52.13, also a season-best. Kim Paradeise, Katie Mullarkey and Jill Collins fell in behind with sixth, seventh and eighth places.

The first first-place finish for Purdue came in the 100 back as Lisa Dolansky showed she is back in form for another great season. With a time of 55.76, Dolansky quickly broke her season-best and Holloway pool record she had set three events earlier. Boilermakers Brandy Keever, Shannon Funk and Brenda Banning finished in fifth, seventh and eighth, respectively, all recording season-best personal times.

Back to back first-place finishes for Purdue gave way to Lindsay Lange in first place with a time of 1:03.89 in the 100 breaststroke. Lindsay Kirchoff, Ronica Rogalski and Karina Bolanos also finished with personal season-bests and took the fourth, fifth and sixth spots.

Finnerty tallied her second second-place finish of the day with a time of 2:04.11 in the 200 butterfly. Karin Stender, Autumn Sample and Stacie Kleber also finished strong with personal season-best times in the 200 fly for sixth, seventh and eighth places.

In event seven, Tracy Duchac was the Boilermakers' first finisher in 24.43 in the 50 freestyle. Jenni Bean, Katie Seleskie and Meryl Tierney finished sixth, seventh and eighth for the Old Gold and Black with season-best times.

The 100 freestyle gave Paradeise her second second-place finish of the evening with a time of 52.37. Leupold, Seleskie and Duchac all fell in behind with times of 52.67, 54.00 and 55.70, respectively.

Lisa Dolansky tallied a season-best time of 2:03.55 for a third-place finish in the 200 backstroke, while Keever, Shannon Funk and Brenda Banning came in fifth, seventh and eighth, as well.

Lindsay Kirchoff tallied a season and team-best time in the 200 breaststroke of 2:21.57 for third place, as Lange was right behind with a time of 2:21.60 for fourth place. Karina Bolanos and Ronica Rogalski finished sixth and seventh for the Boilermakers.

In the 500 free, Leupold finished third with a time of 5:03.01, Mackus fifth in 5:06.53, Bean in 5:15.32 and Meier in 5:19.21.

Finnerty was Purdue's first finisher with second place in the 100 butterfly with a time of 57.03. Behind her were Sample in fifth at 58.01, Stender in sixth at 58.02 and Kleber in eighth at 1:00.16.

The 400 individual medley saw Purdue take away fifth through seventh places with Mackus, Sample and Stender, all with season-best times.

The Boilermakers' team of Dolansky, Bean, Leupold and Paradeise finished second with a time of 3:30.15 in the 400 free relay, while Seleskie, Mullarkey, Finnerty and Duchac finished fourth in 3:35.32.

In the diving events, coach Wenbo Chen made his debut at the helm of the Boilermaker program with some great finishes by the Purdue divers. On the one-meter board, Kara Hajek-Gustafson finished second with a score of 262.28, Molly MacFarlane finished third with a total of 262.20 points, Heather Bachman was fifth with a 216.38 and Carrie Dougherty was sixth with 195.08 points.

On the three-meter, it was the same finishes with 280.28, 255.00, 237.45 and 214.50 points, respectively.

The Boilermakers will return to action tomorrow when they host the Miami (Ohio) RedHawks at 4 p.m. at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center. The men will follow at 6 p.m., also against Miami (Ohio).
