ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Purdue women's soccer team garnered a classy victory today with a 3-0 shutout win over Big Ten rival Minnesota at the Gophers' Robbie Memorial Stadium. The Boilermakers improve to 6-4-1 (2-2-1 Big Ten), while the Gophers fall to 3-6-0 (2-3-0 Big Ten).
"Today was, I think, our best offensive output of the year," said Purdue head coach Rob Klatte. "We were able to keep good shape in the field and we created some wonderful scoring opportunities. I thought we moved the ball well and did a good job controlling the things that we could. It's always nice to be able to go into someplace where several players are from and come home with a win in a game they were able to contribute largely, such as (Jocelyn) Cavalier and (Meghan) Dybvig were able to do today."
The Boilermakers exploded into the game quickly as freshman Lauren Sesselmann drove to the Minnesota end of the field and scored at the 2:32 mark for her fifth goal of the season.
The Old Gold and Black then scored again on a goal by sophomore Annette Kent with the pass from freshman Kim Comisar at the 39:46 mark. Kent's fifth goal of the year was also her third in two days.
Minnesota native and freshman Meghan Dybvig capped of Purdue's sixth win of the year with her first goal as a Boilermaker on a solo shot as the 72:10 mark.
The shot count spread wide between the Boilermakers and the Gophers, as Purdue outshot Minnesota 16 to 6. Purdue also set a 2001 season record as it recorded nine corner kicks to Minnesota's five.
In the goal, another Minnesota native saw her fifth start of the season as she recorded a shared shutout for the second time this weekend. Senior Jocelyn Cavalier tallied three saves for the outing with 84 minutes. Freshman Maureen Carey saw action in the net, as she recorded five minutes in her first outing of her collegiate career.
"I told the women to put forth a good all-around performance and not to worry about the result, as that will come when we take care of the performance. Today that was what happened for us. So, we'll come home and enjoy this weekend's victories today and tomorrow, but then we'll get ready for our games against Michigan State and Michigan this next weekend," Klatte said.
The Boilermakers will return to the field when they travel to East Lansing and Ann Arbor on to take on Michigan State and Michigan. Purdue will take on the Spartans Friday at 4 p.m. EDT and the Wolverines on Sunday at 1 p.m. EDT.
After games played through Sunday, the Boilermakers sit tied for sixth place in the Big Ten with seven points. They are tied with Michigan State, who is 2-3-1 in Big Ten play.
