EAST LANSING, Mich. - After a close third game with effort from each member of the Old Gold and Black squad, the Purdue volleyball team fell 22-30, 19-30, 30-32 to Michigan State on Friday in East Lansing. The Boilermakers fall to 3-16 (1-10 Big Ten), while the Spartans improve to 13-6 (6-6 Big Ten).
"It'll take an entire team effort for us to be successful, and it's been a focus of ours this entire season" head coach Jeff Hulsmeyer said. "When the team plays together it puts us in a position to win. You've got to give lots of credit to our players on the way they stepped up and battled in Game 3."
After trailing in the first two games, the Boilermakers came out and pushed Michigan State to ties at the 4, 5, 6, and 7 marks. Michigan State went on an 8-4 run to take a 15-11 lead. The Old Gold and Black answered with by a kill from junior Tiffany Yoskey, an ace from sophomore Joanna Lowry and two errors by the Spartans to tie 15-all. The game would tie again at 18, 20 and 21 before the Boilermakers went on a tangent of five unanswered for a 26-21 lead. Michigan State went on a 6-1 run to knot the game 27-all. Ties would occur again at the 28, 29 and 30 marks, before the Spartans got the last two points.
Lowry paced Purdue with 11 kills and 11 digs in her third double-double of the season. Rookie Lyndsey Phillips turned in three blocks, while sophomore Jen Bova recorded 29 assists.
The Boilermakers will travel to Ann Arbor to face Michigan at 7 p.m. (EST) on Saturday. The match will be broadcast live on WAZY 1410 AM and www.purduesports.com.
