WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's soccer team tied Iowa, 1-1, today at the Varsity Soccer Complex. With the tie, the Boilermakers' record for the season is 7-5-2 (3-3-2 Big Ten), while Iowa stands at 5-8-1 (3-4-1 Big Ten).
"Despite not coming away with a win, I am happy we continually improved during the game," said Purdue head coach Rob Klatte. "We had lots of chances, especially at the end, and it was disappointing that we weren't able to score on any of them. But, that's just soccer."
Iowa jumped on top 12 minutes into the second half as Nicholle Taylor netted the first goal of the game on a break-away after receiving a pass from Julie Atkocaitis.
Purdue evened the score when freshmen midfielder Kim Comisar took a cross from freshman forward Lauren Sesselmann and placed the ball in the back of the net from 10 yards out. The goal was Comisar's first of the season. Sesselmann and Jenna Silverman were credited with dual assists on the goal. With her assist, Sesselmann moves into sole possession of the single-season individual points record at Purdue.
"The game was a hard-fought battle. Our defense played well, holding Iowa to two shots on-goal," said Klatte. "We had a momentary lapse, and they slipped in and capitalized on it."
The Boilermakers had a couple of close opportunities in the game's final seconds, but could not make good on any of them. Silverman had a shot stopped by a diving save from Iowa goalkeeper Britta Vogele with just two minutes left in regulation.
Then, in the first overtime, sophomore forward Annette Kent had a break-away, but her shot trickled just wide of the right post. Kent followed that up with another great opportunity a minute into the second overtime. But again, the Iowa keeper came up with a diving save.
The Boilermakers controlled the game on the board, as they tallied 18 shots, including 11 on-goal, compared to the Hawkeyes' eight shots, with two on-goal. Purdue also outcornered Iowa, 4-2.
In her sixth start of the year, junior goalkeeper Jocelyn Cavalier recorded 72 minutes and one save in the net before senior Elizabeth Boldt relieved her. Boldt earned her second tie of the year and recorded 49 minutes in the outing.
Purdue will return to action Sunday, as the Fighting Illini of Illinois come to the Varsity Soccer Complex. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
