EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Purdue women's soccer team tallied its fifth shutout of the year with a 2-0 shutout-victory over Michigan State today at Old College Field. The Boilermakers improve to 7-4-1 (3-2-1 Big Ten) and the Spartans fall to 5-5-2 (2-4-1 Big Ten). Freshman Lauren Sesselmann also tied the school record for individual single-season points with 18.

"I thought that even though we can away with a great win, we did not play well today," said Purdue head coach Rob Klatte. "We took our chances early, which got us up, but we have to continue to finish other chances in the first half and on into the second half. When you don't finish those easy chances, it makes a lot more work for our defense and you continue to have to work your way out for the rest of the game.

"Overall, we were very well-organized, defensively, and we didn't give up many chances to Michigan State. Both our goalkeepers did an excellent job today, as well. It's great to get a win and those three points that go with that win."

The Boilermakers exploded into the game, as Sesselmann tapped the first goal in on a rebound shot from the right side at 6:59, just after sophomore Jenna Silverman had sent in a hard first shot that put the MSU keeper on the ground.

Then, at 14:28, Sesselmann found the back of the net again on a shot from the right side when junior Jessica Baumhoff fed the ball out from the middle for her third assist of the year. Her goals bring Sesselmann to season totals of seven goals and four assists for 18 season points.

"Tying that record feels great," said Sesselmann. "Coming in to Purdue, I just wanted to make an impact and getting that record today really boosts my confidence that I can do that both this year and in the future."

In the goal for Purdue, senior Elizabeth Boldt made her seventh start of the year and earned her third victory. The shared shutout brings her shutouts to 2.0 for the season. Subbing in at the half, junior goalkeeper Jocelyn Cavalier made her eighth appearance of the year and brought her shutout total to 2.9 with the shared time.

The Boilermakers outshot the Spartans 12 to 6, despite being outcornered, 6 to 3.

"We'll look to head to Ann Arbor and take home another win with a repeat performance," Klatte said.

Purdue will return to the field as they travel to Ann Arbor to take on Michigan at 1 p.m. EDT on Sunday.
