LINCOLN PARK, Ill. - The Purdue women's soccer team won today at DePaul, 2-0. The Boilermakers improve to 5-4-1, while the Blue Demons fall to 5-5-1.
"Today I thought that we combined a lot of the elements of the game well," said Purdue head coach Rob Klatte. "We went forward well and had lots of little chances with balls 6 to 8 yards out in front of the goal. The penalty kick hitting the post was unlucky, but their keeper also made some good saves. Overall, we stayed organized, moved the ball well and defended well."
Despite a cold, drizzly and windy environment with a very muddy field, the Boilermakers started off well with nine shots to the Blue Demons' one in the first half and a narrowly missed penalty kick at the 44:43 mark.
Then Purdue opened it up in the second half with nine more shots to DePaul's two and tallied two goals with three assists for the third shutout of the year.
Sophomore Annette Kent broke the 0-0 tie only 42 seconds into the second half when she attacked the goal and shot but was rejected, turned around and shot the rebound for the goal.
Kent scored again and put the Boilermakers up for good when she was in the box as freshman Kim Comisar took a corner off the right side. Comisar fed the ball to junior Jessica Baumhoff who found Kent at the 52:12 mark.
The Boilermakers will return to the field on Sunday, when they travel to Minneapolis to take on the Golden Gophers in conference action. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium.
"Today was a good win, but we have to stay focused because we get back to the Big Ten on Sunday," said Klatte. "Minnesota is a must-win for us and those three points for a win will put us back up in the conference standings and prepare us for next weekend's trip to Michigan State and Michigan. Minnesota knows how to play well, having taken wins from Illinois and Ohio State already this year, so it is a big match for us."
