WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's soccer team fell today, 1-0, to the Ohio State Buckeyes at the Varsity Soccer Complex. The Boilermakers fall to 4-4-1 (1-2-1 Big Ten), while the Buckeyes improve to 5-4-0 (2-1-0 Big Ten).

"I thought that Ohio State did a great job of pressuring us all over the field," said Purdue head coach Rob Klatte. "They competed well and had a greater desire to win the game than we did. Like I've mentioned before, we can't wait until we're down to turn it on and we did that again today. We didn't create chances really at all, but especially in the second half. I thought our best chances came in the beginning of the first half, two times we were able to go one-on-one with their goalkeeper and neither time converted to a goal.

"Overall, it's disappointing that they scored off a set play. But we'll have to fix those mistakes during our training sessions and prepare this week for DePaul and Minnesota this weekend."

The game started out quickly and physically, as five fouls were called between both teams in the first seven minutes. But the Buckeyes immediately tallied several shots and burned a lot of time in the Purdue goal area.

The Boilermakers fought back with three good chances to score, but OSU's keeper Jen Heaney was able to make some great saves and prevent a Purdue goal.

The first half ended, still knotted at zero.

Then, at 61:08, Sarah Lanham took a corner kick for the Buckeyes in the north end of the field and dropped the ball into the box where Lisa Grubb headed the ball into the lower left corner of the goal.

The Old Gold and Black was never really able to recover with a good shot, as the Buckeyes tallied their first Big Ten win of the season.

In the goal, senior Elizabeth Boldt, who was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week earlier in the day, made her sixth start of the year and tallied 90 minutes. She saved eight shots for a season goals-against average of 1.00 in 541 total minutes with six total goals allowed.

The Boilermakers were outshot by the Buckeyes, 16-9, and outcornered 6-2.

Purdue will return to the field on Friday, Oct. 5, when they travel to Chicago to take on the DePaul Blue Demons at 4 p.m. The Boilermakers will then continue on to Minnesota to play the Golden Gophers at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 7.
