Sept. 22, 2001

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.-The Purdue women's tennis players came away with more victories and overall finishes in the second day of action at the St. Mary's Health Systems Classic in Knoxville, Tenn., today.

Head coach Mat Iandolo was pleased with today's singles and doubles results.

"We played better doubles today and finished well overall. Tomorrow we're looking forward to finishing strong in the singles final rounds," Iandolo said.

In doubles, the pair of sophomore Gretchen Haynor and redshirt junior Missy Wright defeated Furman's team of Dunnigan and Bentley, 8-2 and received fifth place overall. The freshman team of Lara Bugarello and Shawna Zuccarini disappointed Minnesota's pair of Thomas and Watts, 8-4 and finished in sixth place. Senior Lynsey Fick and freshman Amy Walgenbach upset Minnesota's squad of Perry and Rose, 9-8 (5) finishing seventh.

In the back draw of singles Flight One, Haynor lost to Minnesota's Vladea in a marathon match (7-5, 0-6, 6-4). Haynor finished in seventh place overall by default due to North Carolina's 11th-ranked Mejia's shoulder injury.

Junior Melissa Iqbal fell to Tennessee's Vilmarie Castellvi 7-5, 6-2. Iqbal will be competing for third place tomorrow against Trefethen of Kentucky in Flight Two. Walgenbach lost to Tennessee's Wiski 6-1, 6-2 and hopes to finish third against North Carolina's Mojzis in Flight Three on Sunday. Fick was crushed by North Carolina's Bunn, 6-2, 6-2. Fick will be striving for a third place finish in Flight Five of the singles match. Wright lost to North Carolina's Cline, (6-0, 6-3), and is looking forward to rebound for a third place finish against Kentucky's Stafford in Flight Seven.

In the back draw of Flight Four, Bugarello lost a heartbreaker to Furman's Hagood and hopes to capitalize on a seventh place finish against Georgia Tech's Ozolins tomorrow morning. Freshman Catie McLevish was defeated in three games by North Carolina's Craven, (4-6, 6-2, 6-1). McLevish is anticipating a seventh place finish over Minnesota's Anderson in Flight Eight on Sunday.

Zuccarini crushed Kentucky's Buckley 7-6 (5), 6-4 and seeks a fifth place finish against Minnesota's Rose on Sunday morning in the consolation round of Flight Four.

The final matches will be played Sunday, Sept. 23. Iqbal, Fick, Walgenbach, and Wright will be competing for third place, Zuccarini will be shooting for fifth place, and Bugarello and McLevish will be hoping for seventh place finishes. Full results can be found at www.utladyvols.com.
