Purdue Soccer Routs Wisconsin In Big Ten Opener

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue opened Big Ten play with a 3-0 victory over Wisconsin Friday night in Madison. The Boilermakers scored three goals during a first half scoring barrage and cruised to victory over the Badgers.

"I thought today was a great team performance to open the Big Ten season," said Purdue head coach Rob Klatte. "We did a good job of being organized defensively, we eliminated chances for them to score, especially in the first half, and Jocelyn (Cavalier) made a couple of great saves in the second half when she needed to. Because we were able to have quality finishes from several players in the first half, we were able to get a large number of people into the game and the shutout win proves that that's what happens when we finish our chances. We'll take this and look to move forward to go into Northwestern on Sunday."

Senior Katie Redmond opened the scoring with a goal at the game's 6:50 mark on a pass from freshman Lauren Sesselmann. Purdue tallied their second goal of the night on a 40-yard free kick that was deflected at the six-yard box. Sesselmann got credit for the goal and junior Jessica Baumhoff recorded the assist at 12:22. Sophomore Annette Kent added the Boilermakers third tally of the half at the 29:33 mark from freshman Lori Arnold.

Junior Jocelyn Cavalier made her second start in goal for Purdue, making five saves in 74 minutes of action. Senior Elizabeth Boldt played the final 16 minutes in net and recorded three saves.

With the victory, Purdue improved to 4-2-0 overall and 1-0-0 in the Big Ten. It was also the second shutout of the season for the Boilermakers. The Old Gold and Black will travel to Evanston, Ill. for Sunday's 1 p.m. contest with the Northwestern Wildcats.
