CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Purdue women's soccer team defeated Oregon State tonight, 2-0, for its first road victory and shutout of the 2001 season. The Boilermakers improve to 2-1-0, while the Beavers fall to 2-1-0.

"Defensively, I thought we played very well tonight," said Purdue head coach Rob Klatte. "We were much more organized and denied many of their shooting opportunities. Most of their shots came from far distances and we made a big step in our defensive side tonight. We had success because of a combination of that defense and the fact that we used a large number of players."

The Boilermakers and the Beavers played for more than 70 minutes before the first score. Then, at 71:20, junior defender Elise Berry found an opening behind the Oregon State goalkeeper off of a corner kick from freshman forward Lauren Sesselmann. Berry buried the ball into the left corner of the net with a header for her first goal of the year, while Sesselmann gathered her second assist of 2001.

Boilermaker sophomore Courtney Coppedge was able to seal the game for Purdue in the 80th minute, when she nailed a shot from the left side of the box, about 15 yards out, into the right corner of the goal.

In the goal, senior Elizabeth Boldt tallied 90 minutes for her third start of the season, while recording seven saves. This was also her first personal shutout of the 2001 campaign. Her record improves to 1-1-0.

The Boilermakers recorded 14 shots, including six on-goal, while the Beavers notched 13, including seven on-goal, shots of their own.

"You have to give Oregon State a lot of credit, they're a high-pressure team, they press the ball well and they don't let you play your game until late in the game," said Klatte.

Purdue will be back in action on Sunday when it travels to Portland to play the Portland State Vikings. Game time is set for 11 a.m. PST.
