WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The women's tennis team fell 5-2 to Wisconsin on Saturday at the Lafayette Sports Center. The score, however, did not reflect the closeness of the match.
"Today was very heartbreaking," assistant coach Chris Iandolo said. "We put ourselves in position to win in every match but just didn't finish. The good thing is that despite our record, the girls continue to come out and play with heart and fight for the win."
In doubles action, Melissa Iqbal and Lynsey Fick paired to defeat Lara Vojnov and Teresa Gonzaga 8-4. The Badgers managed to capture wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 position to claim the doubles point.
In singles action, rookie Gretchen Haynor made it look easy at the No. 4 position with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Linde Mues. Missy Wright followed her example at No. 6 with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Gonzaga.
The Boilermakers will return to action Sunday with an 11 a.m. match against Minnesota.
"We are looking forward to playing against Minnesota," Iandolo said. "We have come up short against them the last few years and we are looking for a little revenge."
