The Purdue women's golf team is in seventh place in a field of 17 teams competing at the Bryan National Collegiate in Brown Summins, N.C. The tournament is being hosted jointly by Wake Forest and UNC Greensboro and is being played at Bryan Park Champions Course. A par 72 course, Bryan Park covers 6,064 yards.
"We look forward to improving on our play tomorrow," assistant coach Rayma Fisher added after first round play. The Boilermakers finished with a total of 309 for the first round. The only Big Ten competition competing at Bryan Park is Penn State, who trails the Boilermakers by four strokes at 313. The Boilermakers are also five strokes ahead of Tennessee, who captured the Betsy Rawls Classic, the most recent competition for Purdue.
Leading the way for Purdue is Andrea Makauskas, tied for 13th overall with a first-round score of 75. Caroline Laurens follows with a 77, tied for 26th. Kari Damron is tied for 34th at 78, while Heather Zielinski and Beth Hermes are tied for 47th overall at 79.
Second round play continues tomorrow, with third round play concluding on Sunday.
The Champions Course at Bryan Park was opened for play in 1990. It has received several honors and awards including being listed in America's Best Places You Can Play, ranked 3rd in the state of North Carolina. It has also received a four-star rating and honored as a Great Value 1994-95 and 1996-97 according to Golf Digest.
